Everything is unlikely in this work, from the bright yellow of the mermaid to the stacked gambling chips that make up the buildings around the harbour, to the chance meeting out on the bay of a young man offering a cocktail to a beautiful, if a little fishy, lady. The combination of unlikelinesses give the painting cohesion as a whole, it asks the viewer, "why wouldn't you?"
