Dirigible II
Liza Phoenix, 2001
The second work in this series, a view of the dirigible from
above, and now the dawn has broken spreading pure light across the bay and
into the inlet. As the air warms up, the colour of the dirigible's skin
changes to a polished aluminum, reflecting in this angle the blue of
the sky above.
In the new light, we can see more clearly the jagged
rocks that guard the inlet. The detail of the geological composition of the
rocks is picked out in deep russet tones, and Liza uses light and dark
to emphasise their chiseled, threatening form. Carefully the dirigible
makes its way through the opening and into the shallows on the calmest
of mornings. Its shadow passes silently over the water and helps to
highlight the smooth pebbles on the floor of the bay, fitting together mosaic-like
under the water.
