Dragonplay
Liza Phoenix, 2002
How dragons mate is a timeless, and perhaps now unanswerable, question yet in this picture there is a suggestion of how part of that courtship might be. At first glance it may seem like these fabulous lizards are fighting; the passive and aggressive postures they display suggest the well known training-games played out by many animals such as those in the feline and canine families, but look closer and there is something more at work here.
The darker dragon has his wings extended, on display, showing his endowments in good form. The brighter, female dragon lies supine yet her claws are extended, showing she is aroused. There is a tenderness with which she lays her talons on the male's chest, and the way their eyes are focused on each other builds a tension into this work that has nothing to do with anger or fear. The curl of the female's tail is reminiscent of a lazy sensuous stretch on a Sunday morning in bed; perhaps it is not a question of how dragons mate, but when.
