The Phoenixian Book of Creatures
Hippocampus Hippocampus

A creature with an upper body that resembles a horse and a dolphin-like lower body. The males average around 12 feet from nose to tail and the females are slightly smaller. The body is smooth and hairless except for the mane, also tufts of hair grow on the underside of the forelegs.

It is normal for the creature to have only two front legs ending with thick hoofish fins. Occasionally one will be born with an extra set of gimpy hind legs. Usually these extra legs wither and fall off before adulthood but in some cases they remain throughout the creatures life.

For the most part these are beautiful creatures, strong and noble with the temperament and attitude toward humans that is similar to that of a horse or dolphin. Their coloring is usually uniform and ranges from deep green to greenish bronze or golden. The eyes can be dark brown but most are blue.

In Greek mythology Poseidon’s chariot was drawn by a team of Hippocampi. They are also often ridden by mermaids, and various sea gods and goddesses. Though they are friendly towards humans, they are not known to allow humans to mount.

It may be important to note that this is not a half horse/half dolphin creature but is its own separate species.

Also known as hippokampos, hippocamp, water-horse, or horse-eel.
