Jumbie

A ghost, an evil spirit, or the spirit of the dead. The jumbies of St. Croix decorate themselves with little red seeds known as jumby-beads.

Babies born with a caul will later have the ability to see jumbies.

If a jumbie walks over you or blows in your face you will fall ill, and possibly never recover. Children are especially vulnerable, to protect them keep a Bible or Prayer Book under the child's pillow or keep a bright light in the child's room.

To keep the jumbies out of your house hang a lilac or "hag-bush" over your front door, for further protection keep lilac inside as well.

There are certain plants and trees that should be avoided because they attract or anger the jumbies these are known as the flowering fence, jumby-trees, flame-trees, doodledoos, and giant doodledoos.

Also known as Jumby or Jumbee.
