Gargoyle
Liza Phoenix, 2002
In the strictest translation of the word, gargoyle means throat and the name was given to waterspouts on buildings from Medieval times. In more modern times it has come to mean a combination of grotesque and mischievous, and can be attributed to any small fantasy figure such as in this work. Don't let this one's cute appearance fool you, those wide eyes may seem soft and naive but there is a gleam there betrayed by its smile. Gargoyles are thought to have been used as charms to ward off evil forces, particularly within cathedrals; a warning to other demons that this place was already inhabited.
