The Gorgon Medusa
Liza Phoenix, 2004
A Frozen Angel in the Kingdom of Night
She dances through the dark labyrinths of my mind.
Her long snakes glisten and hiss.
Her body writhes to the rhythm of the wind.
Red rubies are her eyes,
in a face as cold and pale as the moon.
Wings rise, veined and torn, from her serpents spine.
Draped forever in lovely wretchedness.
Her beauty gleams from between the folds.
For from me, her beauty cannot hide.
Her reflection haunts me from my looking glass.
And I ache to witness her with my own eyes.
But I tremble in fear of her icy indifference.
Surely she will turn me to stone like the rest.
Surely she will care for me not,
and never will I revel in her slick dampness.
Instead I will become a monument,
a frozen angel in the Kingdom of Night.
Fixed evermore in perpetual wor-
ship of the gorgon Medusa.
