Orcas with Mt Rainier
Liza Phoenix, 2002
"Stretch, just a bit higher, and if we move back a little you'll be as tall as the mountain!"
Despite their size, both Orcas and mountains are graceful visions, and in this work they combine in powerful symmetry for a wonderfully balanced composition. The majestic simplicity contrasts the solid permanence of the mountain with the fragility of a species still little understood by man. Both hold the ability to surprise us. The colours of the mountain, which has the greatest single peak glacial system in the United States and is an episodic active volcano, are echoed in the smooth skins of the whales. The two merge together as the slope of the mountain continues down the Orca's head and back. This work captures the playful nature of Orcas and their close family connections.
