Return to Stonehenge
Liza Phoenix, 2001
One of the most talked about and mysterious sites on the planet,
circled by an equally mysterious collection of craft, in this painting
Liza captures the possibility of alien influence on one of the best
known World Heritage Sites. We know that the earliest activity around
Stonehenge dates from 2950 BC, but do we have any true understanding of the
meaning, planning or construction of this landmark? How fanciful is it
really that visitors from space could not have had in it all? Perhaps
it was built by early man as a welcoming beacon, a landing strip, an
early morning embrace to expected visitors as they descend from golden
skies. In this work, the spacecraft greet the sun as it rises through the
Sarsen stones lighting their path to hover above the central Trilithon
horseshoe. One day, we may know for sure.
