It's been a long day, a long year, and when she thinks no one is looking she allows herself a few moments of self-pity. It's not like she gets it from anyone else. Exhausted from all she has to think about, worn out before her time, if only she could curl up in bed and sleep for a while, but even there she's not safe. She has known better times and still deep inside her there is a belief that things will get better again; all she has to do is hold on. But what does she hold on to? Her friends have long gone, given up on her attempts to make changes. Her family scorns her approaches, wary of once bitten twice, too many times. She speaks to no one. The only sound from her lips these days is a gasp and a moan, agony not ecstasy. Just a few more seconds to herself before his key moves the lock and the door opens.
