Undine
Liza Phoenix, 2002
The Pre-Raphaelite luminosity of this work gives it an almost
liquid quality: perfect for the subject matter. The position of the
central mermaid makes it ambiguous as to whether she is in the water or on
the shore; cleverly illustrating the amphibious nature of this beautiful
creature. None of the horizontal lines are quite level, giving movement
and emphasising the grace of the tide and the mermaid's curvaceous
body, and her stylised hair caresses her form without hiding her
shapeliness. The use of colour is simple yet effective, the warm tones of the
pebbles show off the mermaid's tail brilliantly and her body glows before
the cool blues of the ocean. A little humour is injected by her teasing
of the fish with a curl of her hair, yet her face is wistful, almost sad, as
if her mind is elsewhere.
