Whimsy
Liza Phoenix, 2002
Diving to the depths, taking air down with him from the surface, this orca swims freely in a swirl of bubbles. The simplicity of this image is evocative of Native American art from the Seattle area, conveying the whale's grace and presence. Through a simple background of primary colours against which the whale twists with ease, his form is accentuated and stands in relief. He is playful, almost smiling as he spirals downwards. The coloured bubbles add to the movement of the piece: this is not a static work. As a totem, whale signifies intelligence and wisdom, and the twinkle in this one's eye suggests he might share a joke or tall tale.
