Wine Mandala
Liza Phoenix, 2005
In this Wine mandala Liza uses the softer shape of the glasses to give a fuller and softer image. The colours are more complex, the repetition more frequent, yet this one of the three appears gentler on the eye.
The yellow glasses in the center illustrate the traditional construction of a mandala using four points or corners, symbolizing the four compass points.
Just as wine is consumed universally by both men and women, so the mandala is a universal symbol of man or woman in the world. The circular motif aids meditation by reminding us of the cyclical nature of all things, and this work with its rounded glasses shows in more detail the tantric trance inducing involvement between viewer and mandala.
